A 24-year-old woman was rushed to hospital with severe sun poisoning after spending just two days abroad. Tamara Harris noticed her eyes swelling up, felt extremely dizzy and discovered a small lump on her head on just the second day of her holiday. Assuming she'd been bitten by an insect, she sought help from a pharmacy and purchased a cream.
However, her condition worsened during her flight home. Upon landing in the UK, she immediately went to A&E where it was determined that she had sun poisoning. "When I woke up the day after getting back home, my whole face was swollen and I couldn't open my eyes," Tamara recalled.
"I went straight to A&E and was given steroids and chlorphenamine [antihistamine] tablets." "My face remained swollen for several days and I had to take three days off work.", reports Birmingham Live .
Sun poisoning is caused by excessive exposure to ultraviolet light and can result in skin inflammation, blisters, headaches , dizziness and nausea. Tamara, an office manager, had travelled to Budapest and feels her experience of the city was marred by her illness. She said: "I felt quite light-headed on my holiday.
Luckily the main side effects occurred as soon as I arrived home." "I don't know what I would have done if it happened while I was away as I was on a solo trip." Tamara jetted off to Budapest in early July and is only just beginning to recover.
The swelling on her face has finally started to go down, with just a few small patches still showing signs o.
