The stereotype-defying female Muslim punk band Lady Parts are back, and they’re finally ready to record their first album. “It’s time to lay down our legacy,” declares lead singer and the band’s driving force Saira (Sarah Kameela Impey). The first series of We Are Lady Parts , which arrived in 2021, won creator and director Nida Manzoor a Bafta for Comedy Screenwriting and served up a three-dimensional spectrum of Muslim womanhood.

It was a fun and ferocious departure from your standard sitcom, with a powerful voice, stunning visuals and stories not seen nearly enough in most mainstream comedies. This long-awaited second instalment further explores the boundaries of religion, identity and sexuality as the band battles to find money to record their album, encountering superfans, romance and the music industry’s dark underbelly along the way. The first time around, we followed Saira’s attempts to get the band off the ground.



She already had drummer Ayesha (Juliette Motamed), bassist Bisma (Faith Omole), and band manager Momtaz (Lucie Shorthouse) on board, but needed a guitarist. Spotting the musical potential of study-focused, socially conservative Amina (Anjana Vasan) sparked a quest to conquer stage fright, tackle online trolling, and forge fierce friendships. Since we last saw her, Amina – who narrates the series – has finished her PhD, and the band has finished their first tour and found a dedicated fandom.
