Carl Mullan is a man of many stories, but his most recent tale about his trip to Bolivia in his early 20s sounds more like something from a comedy sketch show than an actual event. Of course, the story is true, and the 2fm DJ explained how on a trip to an active mine in the South American country, he was encouraged, and succeeded, to buy dynamite. Carl shared the story on his YouTube channel, and explained: ‘I was told I could pay money to get myself inside an active mine, and that’s not even the wildest part about all this [story].

‘So as a tourist going into the mine, it’s customary to buy gifts for the miners, which is fair enough. It’s tough enough work that they have to do, on top of having to deal with some eejit who has gone around with a camera trying to find themselves in South America. ‘So the tourbus has taken us to the mine and it pulls up at this tiny little corner shop and by corner shop, I mean it’s just a shack at the side of the world and it has this lovely lady to sell all these bits and bobs.



We go into the shop and we buy the miners all the things that you might expect: soft drinks, cigarettes, some vodka, coca leaves as well, and this is where I get blindsided. ‘The tour guide comes up beside me and he says, “[Do] you know you can buy dynamite here? So what I would suggest is that we buy three sticks as gifts for the miners and one stick for us.”‘ Carl revealed that while he was ‘a bit tentative about the whole situation’ he deci.
