RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Tropical Storm Alberto has made landfall in northeastern Mexico near Tampico.

It will quickly weaken as it moves over land and mountainous terrain. As of 5 a.m.

, Alberto has sustained winds of 50 mph and is moving west at 13 miles per hour. It’s the first named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, and our second named storm could come by this weekend or early next week near the Yucatan Peninsula. It would be named Beryl.

According to the National Hurricane Center, a broad area of low pressure is likely to develop and move into a favorable environment for tropical development. Meanwhile, a small area of low pressure about 250 miles east of the northernmost Bahamas is producing disorganized shower and thunderstorms. The chance of tropical development has increased to 30% over the next 2 days and 7 days.

Regardless of development, showers and storms move onto Florida and Georgia’s coast early on Friday. A few showers could reach eastern North Carolina into the weekend, but the main concern will be the dangerous waters. A high rip current risk is in effect up and down the east coast Thursday.

This means the water is too dangerous for even strong swimmers..
