Tim Spector is urging people to make a change to their diet to improve their gut health. Pondering what the best things you can do to improve your gut health, the King's College London professor said people need to make sure they eat plants. The health expert, who is also the author of Food For Life , delved into exactly how many plants people should be eating weekly.
He says: "The answer is eating a wide variety of different plants, ideally 30+ a week." And whilst 30 plus may seem like a lot, it's not as difficult as you may think, according to the professor. The health expert explained: "It’s not as difficult as it sounds when you realise this includes nuts, seeds, grains, herbs, and spices as well as the more obvious fruit and veg.
" The "magic number of 30" comes following research the health and wellbeing guru was involved in with the American Gut Project. Looking at the microbiomes of their volunteers, they saw people who eat around 30 different plants every week have much greater microbial diversity than those who eat just 10. He added: "Conducting this research has totally changed the way I approach my diet and in turn, my health, and I’m always incredibly proud when I hear it’s done the same for someone else.
"So before you sit down to your next meal, spare a thought for your gut bugs and include a few more plants – it’s the one of best things you can do to improve your gut health." Join the Daily Record's WhatsApp community here and get the latest news sent.
