Pictures have emerged on social media of people queuing for the ride today, suggesting the closure was not pre-planned. Fans were understandably disappointed with the sudden announcement. One wrote: "We bought tickets especially and are travelling a long way to come.

"What is being done for those of us who have paid to upgrade tickets?" A third simply said: "No!" The new Hyperia ride at Thorpe Park stands at a whopping 236ft tall, claimed to be a foot taller than the record-breaking Big One at Blackpool Pleasure Beach .
