Viduthalai, the 1986 action heist drama was the remake of Feroz Khan's blockbuster Qurbani (1980). K. Vijayan-directed had the talented star cast of Rajinikanth with Sivaji Ganesan (in Amjad Khan's role), Vishnuvardhan (in Vinod Khanna's role), and Madhavi (in Zeenat Aman's role).

Qurbani was also based on the Italian film The Master Touch (1972). The film was directed by Michele Lupo, and it starred Kirk Douglas and Florinda Bolkan in the key roles. Viduthalai was released in the cinemas on April 11, 1986.

The movie opened with mixed critical reception and negative audience reactions. Many noted that despite an enamours budget, the film lacked 'soul'. As a result, the film proved to become a major box office flop.
