Spotting a dolphin in the ocean is one of nature’s most impressive sights, but it’s not something you’d normally associate with the UK. Yet there are places where you can see dolphins - or more often porpoises - right here on our doorstep. In fact porpoises are regularly spotted in the waters of Bardsey Island (Ynys Enlli), off the North Wales Coast.

The island itself is a National Nature Reserve and a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and it’s internationally recognised for its wildlife. Grey seals can be found in the island’s rocky coves, while Risso’s dolphins and harbour porpoises are often seen in the surrounding waters. It is possible to stay on the island, but you can still see the porpoises on a daily boat trip from Porth Meudwy, on the Llyn Peninsula, which is only a stone’s throw away from the village of Aberdaron, around a three-hour drive from Greater Manchester.
