The Karate Kid turns 40 this year. The iconic movie debuted in 1984 and since then has spawned three sequels (the fourth instalment with Hilary Swank as the lead), an animated show, a remake with Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan and the hit Emmy-nominated Netflix show Cobra Kai. It also gave audiences memorable lines "wax on, wax off" and “sand the floor.

” Many fans may not know that the Karate Kid is semi-biographical. Screenwriter Robert Mark Kamen had an experience much like the titular character Daniel LaRusso ( Ralph Macchio ) that led him to learning karate.
