James May reportedly had to pull the plug on his cookery show because he became too good a chef to keep it going. The former Top Gear presenter started his Oh Cook! series on Prime Video under the premise that he was a rubbish cook. But his quest to improve his cooking by creating everyday recipes that the most basic of chefs can master went a bit too well.

His recipe book was loved by fans and James started the second series of his TV show, but it turned out that he actually became a decent cook - meaning the original concept of the show was lost. A TV insider told The Sun : "The whole idea behind the show was James being a clueless cook and learning on the job. It was a totally fresh concept that viewers lapped up, as usually cooking series are presented by professional chefs.

But after two seasons, James is now quite a good cook, so it’s not a gag he can continue to flog." Although he's not quite like your regular celebrity chef, James, 61, has given the rest a run for their money, having sold more copies of his cookbook than he has his other books. Despite his other published books being about areas he has more credibility in - including How to Land an A330 Airbus: And Other Vital Skills for the Modern Man and Carbolics: A Personal Motoring Disinfectant - the Oh Cook! book has sold more copies and continues to receive high ratings from customers.

His second Prime Video series showed he had upped his game when the meals he attempted went from curry and roast dinners to F.
