Last Thursday, all I wanted was something refreshing for lunch. The night before, I'd eaten a boatload of junk food while watching a "Planet of The Apes" reboot marathon. So it was time to initiate course-correction on my digestive tract with a good salad.
But then I looked outside and saw the clouds forming over downtown Davenport. The rain started to fall, and it dawned on me that it was the perfect time, in the typically hot early summer, to get some soup. Soup or salad? Why not both? When deciding where to head, I remembered a reader recommendation for soup from Me & Billy a few weeks earlier.
It was long overdue that I tried Me & Billy, a beloved restaurant just blocks from the newsroom. So I dashed across the parking lot, ducking the suddenly pouring rain, on a soup-salad mission. The soup & salad combo I ordered at Me & Billy came with a Caesar salad, chicken and dumpling soup and a side of grilled bread.
Me & Billy offers a soup-salad combo with the option to add a side of grilled bread, too. For my soup, I went with the restaurant's famous chicken and dumpling soup. This was the reader recommendation, and I'm glad I listened.
The soup was hearty and warm, with generous portions of shredded dark meat chicken and soft dumplings throughout. I went with the side of grilled bread, which made for the perfect buttery vessel to lap up all the extra broth, which had a black pepper kick to it. Onions, celery, corn and carrots added some extra texture to the soup, too.
For my s.
