Sylvia House says staying active makes her feel good. “I think it makes all the difference in the world,” said the 81-year-old longtime Beamsville resident who last month received an Ontario Senior of the Year certificate for the Town of Lincoln . “Being out and being with people and doing things.
” The award recognizes individuals 65 and older who have enriched the social, cultural, or civic life of their communities and is presented by the Ministry of Citizenship and Multiculturalism and the Ministry for Seniors and Accessibility. “There’s a lot of deserving people here, too.” Her activities includes line dancing, exercise classes and playing euchre at the Lincoln Seniors’ Club that meets at Lincoln Community Centre on Central Avenue. The 300-plus-member club recently celebrated its 50th anniversary.
House said she started with the club by helping out in the kitchen and eventually became treasurer. “I’ve been treasurer since 2008,” said House, who many years ago worked as a cashier at the Beamsville IGA and in the produce department at Sobeys in Grimsby. She is also a member of the Beamsville branch of Federated Women’s Institutes of Ontario and St.
