Richard Gadd has hailed Netflix for greenlighting his acclaimed series Baby Reindeer , hot on the heels of the streaming giant being embroiled in a lawsuit concerning the show. The writer and performer expressed his deep appreciation for those who backed his semi-autobiographical seven-part series while accepting the accolade for best breakthrough limited series at the first-ever Gotham TV Awards. Gadd's triumph followed shortly after a woman, alleging to be the muse for a character in his show, initiated legal proceedings against Netflix , citing defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligence, gross negligence, and infringement of her right to publicity.
The woman is seeking damages of no less than 170 million dollars (£133 million), asserting she is the real-life counterpart of the character Martha Scott, portrayed as stalking Gadd's alter ego Donny Dunn in the series. In response to the legal action taken in California, Netflix stated: "We intend to defend this matter vigorously and to stand by Richard Gadd's right to tell his story." "Thanks to Netflix, for everything," Gadd remarked upon receiving his Gotham accolade on Friday.
"I never thought in a million years, that this dark, weird , messed up show would go on to have this universal love that it's received and I'm so grateful to them for giving us this platform to tell the story to the world ." He also commended his fellow actor Jessica Gunning , who took on the role of Martha Scott in the show.
