DULUTH — After six years, artist Tom Napoli is revisiting the tale of the tortoise and the hare. The Duluth artist is back up on his ladder outside of Tortoise and Hare Footwear along 40th Avenue West for up to 12 hours a day to repaint his mural. The original mural was painted mostly in his workshop on large plywood boards that were then screwed together and finished on-site.
Napoli is now adding a few new things to the mural. “There are more animals in the woods, and the trees are getting extra branches,” Napoli said. Napoli expects the retouching, or more accurately, repainting, to take about two weeks.
Then, he will cover it with polyurethane. Napoli is a familiar face in the mural scene in the Twin Ports with works at Gannucci’s, Earth Rider Brewery and Vintage Italian Pizza, just to name a few. And soon, he will start a piece at the Munger Motel.
