There’s been rising pressure on the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts And Scientists in recent years to finally recognise stunt work by including a category for it. The release of films like “Top Gun: Maverick,” the “John Wick” films and more recently “The Fall Guy” have only increased that pressure. Now, speaking with at Cannes, the Academy’s CEO Bill Kramer says all that campaigning hasn’t gone unnoticed.

In fact, early enquiries about a stunts category are underway with members who are a part of that group: “We’re talking to members of the stunt community who are Academy members about the possibility of that. We added a new award that will launch in two years for Casting Directors, so we’re always open to those discussions.” Janet Yang, Academy President, says the Academy continues to change behind the scenes making it possible for such future changes: “The Academy is like a living, breathing organism.

We listen to our members, and if there’s really strong support and there’s whole mechanisms for how to advance the cause, and they’re interested...

That’s what happened with Casting. We’ve created new branches over the decades. So it does evolve, and it evolves with the changing industry.

” Sadly it seems unlikely one will be ready in time to be added to next year’s show, but already people seem to be taking the news as a win judging by reaction to the piece..
