After 14 years at Woodlawn High School, on this day 50 years ago, it was revealed head coach A.L. Williams would leave the Knights to join the staff at Northwestern State University.

Williams coached the 1968 Knights, including quarterback Joe Ferguson, to a 14-0 record and a Class 3A state championship. He produced seven district championship teams – the first two came as an assistant under legend Lee Hedges, who he replaced as head coach in 1966. Williams was expected to fill the Demons’ offensive backfield coaching position under head coach George Doherty.



As a senior at Fair Park in 1952, Williams led the Indians to a Class 2A state crown..
