Everyone likes to have at least a few plants in their garden to make it a more attractive environment. But gardening expert James Ewens from Alexander Francis has warned of the stealthy invaders lurking in our backyards, with some plants being so destructive they can devalue your property and even land you in legal trouble. 1.

Japanese knotweed The expert said: "Probably the most commonly known nuisance plant on this list, Japanese Knotweed has been known to do so much damage that it is checked for on house buying surveys and can seriously impact the value of your home. "While it isn't illegal to grow Japanese Knotweed in your garden, it is highly ill-advised given that it can grow through concrete and takes years to eradicate, it is one of the most invasive plants known. You can still be prosecuted or issued a community protection notice if you allow it to spread onto someone else's property.



" 2. Giant hogweed Giant hogweed, which looks similar to cow parsnip, can often be spotted near rivers and motorways. It contains a chemical which can cause third-degree burns and result in "permanent scarring".

If you spot some, it's advised to arrange a removal with your local council. Whilst it is not illegal to have this growing in your garden, it is an offence to cause or allow it to spread. 3.
