Faced with a rising demand for athletic field space, Marin Catholic High School is again seeking a permit to install permanent field lights at its stadium in Kentfield. The high school submitted an application this month with the Marin County Planning Commission for a permanent field lights permit, said Chris Roeder, a member of the high school’s board of trustees. “Throughout Marin, including the Marin Catholic campus, there is a tremendous lack of field space for our youth,” Roeder said.

The school has only two fields — a stadium and a baseball diamond — compared to other high schools with multiple fields, he said. “At MC, the demand for field space continues to rise with the growth in our female field sports, particularly women’s lacrosse and soccer,” he said. “Having access to one of our fields in the evening hours would solve this persistent issue with field space by creating the necessary flexibility for existing practices and games.

” The last application for permanent lights was submitted in 2016, but was withdrawn. Instead, the school continued, as it has for 25 years, to use temporary construction-style lights in the late fall and winter. In late 2020, the high school was granted an extension on the use of the temporary lights until mid-March 2021, but officials said at the time they would not support that extension after that.

The new application for four LED light structures surrounding the field will come before the Kentfield Planning Advisory .
