Makoto Shinkai's next project will reportedly shift away from his usual romance, folklore, and natural disaster themes, leaning more towards science fiction. The information comes from @donut2x on Twitter/X, known for past anime leaks. According to the account, Shinkai’s next film will be set in a completely different world, possibly in “the distant future,” with no connections to his previous works.
Unlike his films such as Garden of Words, Your Name, Weathering With You, and Suzume, which are based in Japan, the upcoming project reportedly won’t be “limited to Japan.” The film will also feature “authorial traits.” As for more information, a press conference is set for December 2025, with an expected release date in 2026.
Keep in mind these are early rumours, so take them with a grain of salt. In its 9/10 review of Suzume , IGN wrote: “Thanks to its strong cast, thought-provoking plot, and wonderful animation, Suzume is one of the most captivating animated films released this year.” Got any news tips, or want to discuss a possible story?
