Cayuga County could have a full-time administrator next year if the county Legislature gives thumbs-up to a proposed local law that a panel of lawmakers endorsed late yesterday. The action comes less than a month after Legislature Chairman Ralph Standbrook, R-Fair Haven, was tapped to serve as the county's full-time leader, a job that hikes his annual salary from $18,500 to $37,800. The Legislature's Government Operations Committee voted 4-1 to support the administrator proposal.

Legislator Mike Valenti, R-Auburn, was the committee's lone dissenter. Plans call for the administrator to assume office early next year with an annual salary between $50,000 and $60,000. While the salary is slightly lower in comparison to what neighboring Wayne County pays its new administrator, local lawmakers want their candidate to have a college degree and at least 10 years experience.

Lawmakers are opting to create the county administrator post by local law, which requires a public hearing. However, the proposal won't be subject to the scrutiny of county voters. Since 1985, county voters have rejected both a proposal for a county manager and a county administrator.
