Kabosu, the dog which inspired the iconic 'Doge' meme has died at the age of 18. The canine passed away reportedly from leukemia and liver disease. Kabosu's owner Atsuko Sato made the announcement on Instagram claiming that she passed away without suffering.

"To all of you who loved Kabosu, On the morning of the 24th of May, Kabosu crossed the rainbow bridge. Thank you all so much for your support over the years," Sato wrote on Instagram. "She went very peacefully without suffering, as if falling asleep while feeling the warmth of my hands petting her," she further said adding that Kabosu was the happiest dog in the world.



ALSO SEE: Kabosu belongs to the Shiba Inu breed and was adopted by Sato, who is a teacher in Japan, in 2008. The dog shot to fame after her picture with a smirk went viral on social media in 2010. The picture was later referred to as a 'doge' as a nod to an episode of Homestar Runner from 2005.

The cryptocurrency Dogecoin is named after this very meme. Meanwhile, Kabosu's owner is now planning her deceased pet's farewell ceremony on May 26. ALSO SEE: It is a sad day for netizens as many are mourning the passing away of Kobuso - arguably the Internet's favourite dog.
