Maurice Bernard’s time on the daytime soap opera as Sonny Corinthos almost ended after his recent health struggle. The television star, 61, has been portraying the manic mob boss on since 1993. Many who watch consistently have become major fans of Maurice and how he acts out the character, making his presence missed when he’s not on the show.
Maurice recently opened up on his podcast State of Mind about why he had to step away from his role in temporarily. The dramatic actor was away so long from the show that he “would have had to be recast,” according to SheKnows. Maurice revealed that over a month ago “anxiety came knocking” in his life and that things had begun getting out of hand, much of which was his “fault,” he admitted.
“Not going to therapy like I should and everybody should,” Maurice said. “You know, it’s just one of those things. Plus, I was playing a character on that is bipolar and off his medication.
" The “main reason” that he started having anxiety was because his son Joshua and wife Paula had traveled to Europe. “The main reason was that I started feeling anxiety and then my son and my wife went to Europe and they’re the two people who, when I’m going through anything, can talk me out of it or talk me down,” Maurice explained. “At night, I’d wake up in the middle of the night shaking, and then I couldn’t get back to sleep.
” Although Maurice was taking medication, it wasn’t working. He was too embarrassed to speak .
