A few years ago, if you told me I'd be looking beyond my regular dentist - and even beyond Ireland - for getting major treatment, I probably would have said: "Thanks, but that's not for me." Even today, I would be very cautious about going abroad for any kind of medical treatment, we have all seen the dramatic stories of major mistakes made in places like Turkey, and when it comes to my teeth, I would be very risk-adverse. However, when I got an estimate for replacing four teeth with implants, work that had to be done, that ran to at least €13,000, I started to think seriously about other options - which led me to the European capital for safe, tightly regulated dental work at affordable prices, Budapest.

At the end of last year and earlier this year, after doing a lot of research and talking to a number of clinics, I made two trips to the Hungarian capital and it's most modern, purpose-built, modern dental clinic, Helvetic Clinics and you can read about my experiences there by clicking here. I wanted to wait around six months to report on how the implants settled in, and I can say, the whole process has worked out very well. Up to 12,000 Irish people travel to Budapest every year now for dental treatment, I did my research based on very strict criteria, starting with the website Treatment Abroad , which lists ratings, standards and awards achieved and details on issues like liability insurance and aftercare.

My strong advice would be also to check out prospective clinics o.
