Between the locally-owned businesses, proximity to Southport beach and the chance of bumping into a celebrity or two, it's no surprise that Birkdale village has come alive in recent years. A thriving part of Merseyside, the village has become a hotspot for locals, weekend regulars and day-trippers alike. Birkdale isn't your average village, however, with Selworthy Road, one of the most sought-after streets in Merseyside, just a stone's throw away.

It's not uncommon to spot a former footballer or TV star going about their business as you stroll through the streets. Notably, almost all the bars and businesses in the Victorian village are owned by local residents, reports the Liverpool Echo . So every time you purchase a pint of IPA, a glass of wine, or even a refreshing soft drink, you can sip safe in the knowledge that you're directly contributing back to the local community.

This quaint village, which is located just to the south of Southport, has managed to retain many traditional businesses over the years, including a fishmonger, butcher and greengrocer. Birkdale Cheese Co. is a particular highlight, offering 150 varieties of cheese, including your classic Birkdale blue and more unusual cheeses like the 8 Blumen - a swiss cheese wrapped in eight different varieties of wildflower.

The shop was recently named as one of this year's most influential cheese retailers in the UK, and those returning from coastal walks along the nearby Southport beach can sit outside and enjoy a gl.
