part two isn't coming to HBO. Michaela Coel's hotly anticipated , according to executive producer Phil Clarke. Made for both and the UK's BBC, a second instalment was teased three years ago by director Piers Wenger.
The broadcasting corporation's then-drama director said at the time, "It's at relatively early stages, but I wanted to let the fans of I May Destroy You know that there is a new show coming along." Now fans are a little upset after the reported U-turn on ideas. Phil tells Deadline that Michaela had been working on "I May Destroy You 2" before deciding against it.
"When Piers went public, we were all talking about it," he said. "Those were Michaela's thoughts as well. But then we rightly decided there wasn't much more to say.
You can only conclude that once you've explored it a little bit." His company Various Artists Limited produced I May Destroy You for HBO and the BBC after Michaela famously snubbed an initial $1million offer from Netflix after the streaming site refused to let her retain any percentage of the series' copyright. It premiered in 2020 just after the pandemic kicked off and was based on Coel's experience of being sexually assaulted, starring herself and Paapa Essiedu.
It won two Emmy Awards and two BAFTAs, it also became the only show of this decade to be voted in the UK’s Broadcasting Press Guild’s top 50 programs of the past 50 years. News of a possible second show being scrapped hasn't gone down too well with fans on X, formally Twitter. Wi.
