A new football-inspired song has been released from sporting legend John Barnes as he returns to the mic after 34 years. Across the continent, fans are getting excited as the Euros 2024 kicked off on June 14 in Germany . Although an 80s pop hit is set to become the unofficial anthem of the tournament, a new tune from a former footballer is set to give that hit a run for its money.
Barnes, the beloved footballer who played for England and later became a manager and a pundit, has teamed up with the plant-based food company This to create a football-inspired tune called This is the One. The song is a medley of barbeque puns and footy references as Barnes sings: ‘We’re the Barmy Army..
. can you hear us singing? ‘And this is the one..
. so let’s get grilling’ The video shows a Gareth Southgate lookalike helping himself to a burger as Barnes takes over BBQ duty and grills up a storm. The song references Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Paul Gascoigne, along with some current squad players including Phil Foden, Cole Palmer, Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham.
The former Liverpool and England player is taking to the mic 34 years after the release of his chart-topping 1990 England World Cup song World in Motion. World in Motion was released by New Order and the England football team of 1990 for the Fifa World Cup campaign. In the 30-year-old hit, Barnes rapped on the track which later went to number one on the UK singles chart.
