TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. (WSAV) – A large blaze temporarily closed the Tybee Island Pier and Pavilion as officers worked to put out the flames. Around 1:30 p.
m. on Saturday, June 8th, Tybee Island Police and Fire responded to a fire in the dunes around the area of the beach near 16th Street. Police cleared the pier as a precautionary measure, while firefighters worked to put out the flames.
The fire, which spanned approximately 80 square feet of the dune system, took about 40 minutes to completely extinguish. The cause of the blaze remains undetermined, however, witnesses reported hearing a “popping” sound before the flames began. No one was injured during the fire.
