ALDA — A close look at the bison of Crane Trust — their history, this herd this year and plans for the future — will be the focus of an upcoming program at the organization’s Nature and Visitor Center. Range manager Josh Wiese will present the program Tuesday, July 9, as part of the Trust’s Potluck Speaker Series. A lone bison ambled through a Crane Trust pasture near the headquarters complex southeast of the Alda I-80 exit on a foggy spring morning.

Other bison in another part of the pasture were hidden by the fog. Those bison will be the focus of a program presented by range manager Josh Wiese at 7 p.m.



Tuesday, July 9, at the Crane Trust Nature and Visitor Center south of Alda. Wiese earned a bachelor’s degree in wildlife biology from the University of Nebraska at Kearney, focusing his studies on plants, ecology and phylogenetics. Since his internship in 2015, he has filled several roles at the Crane Trust, including herbarium scholar, science technician, and habitat ecologist.

He completed his master of environmental management degree through Western Colorado University in 2022, continuing his long-term commitment to the Crane Trust and studying, restoring and protecting habitat in the Platte River Valley that he calls home.
