Not all superheroes wear capes and that is certainly true in the Netflix hit Supacell. Set in the gritty, urban environment of south London , the show has plucked five young black characters from the streets and given them extraordinary powers as a result of a mutation of the sickle cell gene. These powers can transform their lives and that of those around them.
Tazer (Josh Tedeku) has the power of invisibility, Andre (Eric Kofi-Abrefa) has super strength, Rodney (Calvin Demba) has super speed and healing powers, Sabrina (Nadine Mills) has telekinetic abilities, and Michael (Tosin Cole) can travel through time and space. Film-maker Andrew Onwubolu, aka Rapman, said he wanted to “tell a story about powers, but with normal people [who have] relationship problems, problems with their children, problems with their siblings, problems at work, problems on the streets”. The six-part series, which premiered on Netflix on 27 June, has already earned rave reviews.
The Guardian described the sci-fi series as “an absolute riot, strikingly performed and bracingly plotted to a sensational soundtrack with five nuanced characters all battling complex problems”. While Empire said “in a televisual sea of white noise, this is propulsive, compulsive viewing”. And there is already clamour for a second series of the show.
