LW: Christine Lampard announces Helen Worth's Corrie exit At the start of June, Coronation Street star Helen Worth revealed she was stepping down from her role as Gail Platt after 50 years. First making her debut in the ITV soap back in 1974, viewers have seen the character involved in some of the most dramatic plots on the cobbles. However, the 73-year-old has confessed it’s now the “perfect time” to bow out after a successful five decades.

Since the news of her exit, fans have been speculating how the iconic character will make her exit. Although some feared she’d fall victim to evil Joel Deering (played by Calum Lill), who was responsible for beating missing teen Lauren Bolton (Cait Fitton), it seems as though her exit could take a very different turn. A source told The Sun that Coronation Street bosses want Gail to have a happy ending, which could see the comeback of the iconic character Martin Platt, played by Sean Wilson.

They told the publication: “A number of options were considered for Gail’s departure from the cobbles but bosses knew the moment needed to truly celebrate one of Corrie ’s most iconic characters as well as honour Helen’s astonishing run on the soap.” READ MORE BBC Breakfast's Naga Munchetty forced to apologise as live blunder disrupts sho Helen Worth has decided to step down from her role as Gail Platt in Coronation Street (Image: ITV) As the source explained that it didn’t feel right to kill Helen’s character off, after the many .
