CORONATION Street viewers have hit out at bosses for ‘changing’ a long-standing character’s personality over the years. Since the ITV soap began in 1960, countless characters have graced the cobbles of Weatherfield. As time has passed, the writers have further developed the residents of Coronation Street to adapt and fit into storylines.

However, several viewers have been left unhappy with the direction one character has taken over a number of years. Taking to Reddit , a fan addressed the transformation of Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson), who has been in the show since 1989. They mentioned how Steve, who is nowadays used as a lovable comedic character, had been “a bit of a villain, womaniser and dodgy guy”, but had since turned into a “buffoon guy.



” Other fans soon flocked to share their agreement. One wrote: “This was all done by the actor, not bosses, bosses resisted his character change but relented in the end. “I think bosses were correct and Steve should have stayed as he was.

“Steve could have turned into a Mike Baldwin sort of character, now his female equivalent on the show is probably Mary.” Another remarked: “Used to be a great character, getting into all kinds of scrapes, dramatic and comedic. "Like many of the characters, they can only really work with the c****y storylines and direction they're given.

” A third shared: “Honestly it started about 20 years ago.” During his time on the soap, Steve has married five women and later, at diff.
