CHRISTOPHER STEVENS reviews last night's TV: Vicky McClure's terrific as a woman on the edge in this ominous thriller By Christopher Stevens Published: 01:07, 24 May 2024 | Updated: 01:12, 24 May 2024 e-mail View comments Insomnia (Paramount) Rating: Beware of perfect husbands. Be suspicious when they serve breakfast in bed, when they never get irritable, when they prepare dinner, when they read the children a bedtime story. They’re up to something.

Vicky McClure, plagued by sleepless nights as the fraught lawyer Emma in Insomnia, has a lot on her mind. There’s her feckless sister Phoebe (Leanne Best), just back from travelling the globe and now treating Emma’s magnificent home as her own. There’s the curse her mad old mother laid upon her as a child: ‘You’ve got the bad blood!’ Vicky McClure as fraught lawyer Emma in Insomnia All this veers from suburban drama to full-on screaming horror movie, which gives McClure (pictured) plenty of opportunity to show what a versatile actress she is But if you ask me, her real problem is that she’s got a really lovely hubbie.

Robert (Tom Cullen) is tender, passionate and understanding. He forgives Emma’s moodiness. He even made their dining room table in his carpentry workshop, for heaven’s sake.

Robert has no business in a tale this creepy and ominous, unless he’s Not To Be Trusted. Emma must know this, subconsciously, because she has never been entirely frank with Robert about her past. He thinks her mother, Patric.
