Carol Vorderman says the disappearance of teenager Jay Slater has made her reflect on the time she once went missing. The TV star struggled so much following the death of her longtime friend and co-presenter Richard Whiteley that she made a decision to run away. After experiencing so much grief in the public eye, Carol says she just got in her car and put her foot down in a desperate bid to escape.

However, fans were quick to take to the comment section of footage captured of Carol telling the story to point out it 'doesn't compare' to what's happened to Slater. The emotional telly favourite told LBC that she just locked herself away for days and days and didn't communicate with anyone amid the hunt for the British 19-year-old in Tenerife. Now into the eighth day of the search involving mountain rescue teams, local police, the Civil Guard and fire crews, there are no clear clues over what has happened.

Explaining her struggle, she heartbreakingly told the radio programme: “Richard Whiteley died, and he died quite suddenly. Every day people would talk to me about him, even though I wasn’t with him. There was a great love between us, but I couldn’t cope, I just couldn’t cope.

" Explaining that her children were staying with her ex husband at the time, she went on: “I couldn’t cope with being in the public eye, I just didn’t know what to do. I just had to disappear. I didn’t want anyone I knew around me, I just got in my car and I drove.

I eventually found a hotel.
