Online casino LuckyDays.com decided to find out which movies in recent years have performed the worst but are rated the best. Fifty films were given an overall performance score which combined three metrics — the rating of the movie on Rotten Tomatoes, Letterboxd and IMDB — to determine which of the top underperforming films were rated the best.
According to LuckyDays.com, Canadian director Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049 is the best-rated movie of the last 50 years that had the biggest loss at the box office, adjusted for inflation. The 2017 fantasy adventure thriller starring Canadian Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford scored a total of 83 out of a possible 100 in the index but still managed to lose an estimated $99 million dollars at the box office.
Director Terry Gilliam’s 1988 movie The Adventures of Baron Munchausen , and 2022’s animated movie Turning Red , tied for second place with a score of 78 out of 100. Munchausen and Turning Red were estimated to have lost $99 million and $174 million, respectively. Ranked at No.
4 with an overall score of 77 out of 100 is 2020’s animated Onward with $153 million in estimated loses. Coming in fifth place is 2016’s Deepwater Horizon , about the British Petroleum oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and starring Mark Wahlberg and Kurt Russell, which scored 74 out of 100 but is estimated to have lost between $76-$143 million at the box office. Christopher Nolan’s 2020 brain-puzzler Tenet placed sixth with a 70 out of 100.
