DULUTH — Sure, Memorial Day was a month ago and the astronomical start of summer was June 20, but as the weather warms up and the beaches fill, it becomes apparent that in a certain sense, summer in Duluth doesn't really begin until around the Fourth of July. Maybe that's why we celebrate with one of the biggest fireworks displays around. A week of Bayfront entertainment For Duluth's most visible outdoor stage, July 4 isn't just a day, it's a very extended weekend.
On Wednesday, July 3, the perennial popular cover band Hairball fills the harbor with the sounds of glam metal. On the holiday itself, July 4, a Fourth Fest stars that giant fireworks display but also offers musical entertainment from four acts including Paul Metsa and Danny Frank & The Smoky Gold. Then, on Saturday, July 6, Trampled By Turtles make their triumphant return for a hometown show featuring opener Houndmouth and Baharat, winner of this year's Palomino Grant (bayfrontfestivalpark.
com). ADVERTISEMENT Minnesota Mean As Harbor City Roller Derby fans know, hockey isn't the only skating sport the Gopher State takes very seriously. The documentary "Minnesota Mean" follows six Minnesota Roller Derby athletes on and off the track, and it's been warmly received by Twin Ports audiences.
