Millie Gibson’s Doctor Who character Ruby Sunday will only make fleeting appearances in next year’s series, show insiders say. Viewers saw Ruby bid a tearful farewell to the Doctor in Saturday’s finale, choosing to stay on Earth with her newly discovered biological mother, played by Faye McKeever. And sources told the Mirror that Millie’s 2025 scenes will be minimal.
One insider said: “In next year’s series there is a big standalone episode featuring Ruby reminiscing about her time with the Doctor, as a flashback. And then the story about her and her family members is wrapped up in the season finale. But it’s more about them than her.
” However, the insider added “the door has been left open” for Millie to return as Ruby in the future. A clip featuring Ruby has been released as a “sneak peak” trailer for the next series and shows the character in a bar telling people to stay inside, then flicking through a photo album with her mum and friends. Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies said Ruby had simply been put on hold for now but she would return to the show before long.
He explained: “This is a pause. I genuinely felt Ruby’s story paused there. She couldn’t get all that information about her family, all that emotional overload, and run off in the TARDIS.
It pauses there. She’s coming back.” The Mirror revealed in January that Millie was being replaced by a new companion played by Varada Sethu, 32.
Millie, 20, has since signed to star in a ma.
