Baroque violinist Maia Silberstein — who grew up in Davis and nowadays lives in Belgium — returns to her hometown for a concert on Sunday, July 7, at 3 p.m. at Davis Community Church 412 C St.
The concert is free, but donations (supporting the musicians) are appreciated. Silberstein added “ I will be playing with my dear friend and favorite chamber music partner, the harpsichordist, Katherine Heater” (of the Bay Area). Silberstein and Heater have presented a midsummer concert of Baroque music at Davis Community Church several times in recent years.
Silberstein continued, “ We will play a Baroque program on the theme, ‘Metamorphosis: from Ashes to Flight.’ This program is inspired by the image of the phoenix, (a mythological creature) which is consumed by flames, but then regenerates from its own ashes, taking flight once more. This program takes us through a musical journey of the metamorphosis of suffering being transformed into courage, hope and finally joy.
” Included will be compositions by Henry Purcell, Johann Heinrich Schmelzer, G.F. Handel, H.
I.F. Biber, J.
S. Bach, Dario Castello and Antonio Bertali, all of whom lived in the 1600s and 1700s. Silberstein graduated from Davis High School several decades ago (playing in several of the school’s performing ensembles), and then moved to Europe and continued her musical studies at conservatories there.
She has played and recorded with several well-established groups in Europe that specialize in Baroque music.
