Alan Titchmarsh has defended his jeans after North Korea censored them from telly viewers, branding them a symbol of American imperialism. But as the TV gardener pointed out: “If you know anything about denim you will know it means ‘de Nimes’ and is from France originally.” North Korea banned jeans in the 1990s when its then leader Kim Jong-il declared denim trousers had no place in a socialist state.

While attending the RHS Chelsea Flower Show the presenter laughed he has ruled out ever visiting the communist nation to avoid his trousers causing “an international incident”. The Yorkshireman, who turned 75 this month, admitted: “I had a good laugh about the story, though.

” He quipped: “It’s taken me to reach the age of 74 to be regarded in the same sort of breath as Elvis Presley , Tom Jones, Rod Stewart.
