Organizers announced Thursday morning that the food drive, a large-scale community effort that took place for 20 years until its finale in 2021, will return on Oct. 4 at the Airport Plaza Kroger on U.S.

36 in Decatur. “The need is there, so we’re back,” said WSOY Community Food Drive co-founder Brian Byers. The 12-hour event will see the return of volunteers collecting non-perishable foods and monetary donations, while WSOY on-air talent conduct interviews and report financial updates from a stage positioned in front of the store.



“We need everybody to concentrate on this food drive day,” said co-founder Kevin Breheny. “We have found a lot of trust from the community ..

. but it’s been three years. We’ve got to get them back in the swing of things.

” Schools will also have the opportunity to challenge each other through innovative competitions. The top five local schools that collect the most food and/or monetary donations for the drive will receive financial awards. “Anyone can help support their favorite school by donating in their school’s name,” organizers stated in a press release.

“All Macon County Schools grades K-12 are eligible to participate.” In the past, 17 food pantries benefitted from the previous food drives. “We live in a community that will step up and help,” Breheny said.
