Kroger and Albertsons will sell more than 400 stores, including 28 in Louisiana and Texas, and other assets for about $1.9 billion, seeking to clear a path for a merger with antitrust regulators reviewing a deal that would unify two of the nation's largest grocery chains. Two Albertsons stores in Louisiana will be among nearly 600 locations across the country that will be offloaded to C&S Wholesale Grocers as part of the pending Albertsons-Kroger merger.
The stores at 2750 Country Club Road in Lake Charles and 105 E. Southfield Road in Shreveport made the list as part of the divestiture plan associated with the merger, . It will also include six distribution centers and a dairy plant.
Workers at the affected locations will become C&S employees, reports indicate. It’s the latest in the pending deal between the two supermarket giants, and the list was released about six weeks before a significant court hearing about the deal. The Federal Trade Commission sued back in February to stop the merger, which represents about 20% of the U.
S. grocery market. Albertsons has 16 stores in Louisiana, including three in Lafayette and one in Broussard.
Kroger has stores in Lake Charles, Sulphur, Alexandria and Shreveport..
