DAVENPORT — Serving hotcakes, home fries and hamburgers, Home Plate Diner has hit a home run with homestyle foods in Davenport. Owner Mark Farrell said he was very intentional with where he chose to open the restaurant, 3112 Rockingham Road. Home Plate Diner is open at 3112 Rockingham Road in Davenport.
"You don't see a lot of places available to put a diner in. This is the place where my grandma had owned and operated for her business, and so I knew about it, and it's been a lot of different places since then," he said. "It's been available for maybe two years or so; I decided I would see if I could get it and try it out.
" While Home Plate features much of your typical American diner-style fare, Farrell says that the homemade soups and pies are what folks come back to. "The pie is what I seem to get the most compliments on," he said. "People who know me will consider me the pie maker.
" The pie selections rotate, including pecan, coconut cream and various fruit pies. While on the topic of "home," Farrell says the name was no mistake either. "I'm a baseball fan, it just kind of came to mind one day," he said, emphasizing the menu's handcrafted nature.
