Two restaurants under one roof claim the title of “oldest family-run” in Portsmouth. Dinnerhorn began in 1960 as a drive-in on Route 1 with seafood, burgers and shakes. A dining room was opened in 1965.

By 1968, the owners had converted the restaurant’s outdoor patio into the Bratskellar, a pub serving pizza, subs and beer. Now the second and third generations of the Kamakas family are following in the footsteps of founder Chris Kamakas. And the two restaurants are full of family parties enjoying both spaces — the more formal dining room of the Dinnerhorn and the 1970s-kitsch of the Bratskellar (affectionately known as The Brat).

There’s a connecting door between the two, and Dinnerhorn diners can order from the Bratskellar menu. Why is the reverse not true? We’ve never gotten a clear answer, but it seems to have to do with keeping the seafood segregated from the pizza. And oh, what seafood it is.

Fresh, and perfectly cooked, whether fried, baked, broiled, grilled or paired with pasta. Our go-to order is the Captain’s Plate, which comes with fried scallops, .
