From thick and meaty, square-cut Regina-style and Montreal’s all-dressed to Nova’s Scotia’s Pictou County brown-sauce and donair-topped pies, Canadian pizza has its own unique personality. Like so much else in Canada, that uniqueness can vary from region to region. Windsor pizza, topped with shredded pepperoni, canned mushrooms and locally made cheese, may not be as famous as the rectangular pan pizzas across the border in Detroit.
Despite its lower profile, it has devoted fans who have it shipped nationwide. A Windsor-style pizza place even opened outside the city in 2021, selling fresh and frozen pies in downtown Toronto. A chef in Toronto invented sushi pizza and Indian-style pies with toppings Moving west, pizza pops were invented in Winnipeg.
Regina-style pizza — loaded with toppings with plenty of cheese melted on top — is unique to Saskatchewan and, like so many of Canada’s pizza inventions, was created by Greek immigrants. Edmonton’s love of pizza is so strong that it once beat out Florence and Milan in a Condé Nast Traveler pizza poll. Vancouver is famous for its seafood pizza, which has toppings such as shrimp, prawns, crab legs, lobster tail and smoked salmon.
