Summertime brings the heat — but also many cool, delicious ways to beat it at Granite State Candy Shoppe in Concord. The 13 Warren St. store, known for its wide variety of chocolates and candies, has sundaes, frappes, ice cream cones, root beer floats, and packaged ice cream for customers to enjoy.

The most popular sundae is actually the “make-your-own” sundae. After letting a staffer know what kind of ice cream and sauce they want, customers can choose from more than 30 toppings to add to their treat at the shop’s toppings bar. “Don’t worry,” the staff says, “we won’t weigh it!” Among the many choices: rainbow jimmies, caramel cups, gummy bears, crushed toffee, cashews, and mini M&M’s.



Creating your own sundae is a big hit with kids who — according to manager Tal Smith — sometimes decide on which ice cream they want based on its color rather than its flavor. The store’s menu of specialty sundaes, available in two sizes, include peanut butter cup, chocolate trio, very berry, mint cookie crunch, caramel cup, coffee toffee treat, ultimate cookies and cream, and more. According to shop co-owner Jeff Bart, the two most popular: Maple Saurus Sundae, which features New Hampshire maple pecan cream topped with swirls of real New Hampshire maple syrup and roasted pecans, and Chocolate Dish Sundae – vintage vanilla ice cream in a real chocolate dish, topped with swirls of hot fudge.
