June is a busy month for the feline species. It is “National Adopt a Cat Month” and “Adopt a Shelter Cat Month,” and on June 19, it is both “National Garfield the Cat Day” and “Take Your Cat to Work Day.” Last but not least, June 24 is “Cat World Domination Day,” the day when kitties around the world gather to plot their takeover.
But don’t let that dissuade you. With kitten season here, and more cats in need than ever, it is the perfect opportunity to consider adopting a homeless feline. However, as with any decision that affects you and your family, it is one that should not be taken lightly.
When adopting a cat, you are committing to care for him for the rest of his life, which can be up to 20 years or more. Caring for any pet is more than providing the basics of food, water, and shelter and cats are no exception. Before adopting, evaluate your own wants and expectations.
By being honest regarding the lifestyle both you and your family have, it will help determine the type, age, etc. of the feline that is a perfect fit. Review your current living conditions and determine what animal is appropriate.
Kittens are adorable, but they require a lot of attention. Adult cats typically are housebroken and usually calmer than kittens. If you rent, check that your landlord allows pets.
If you have, or are expecting a baby, consider whether you will have enough time to attend to the feline’s needs. If there is already a pet present, determine if it will share i.
