One of William & Mary’s better baseball seasons in recent memory ended not only with an 18-8 defeat Friday to Delaware but also the news Saturday that coach Mike McRae will not be retained. In what turned out to be his final game, the Tribe fell behind 13-0 in the second inning and couldn’t catch up in an elimination game at the Coastal Athletic Association Tournament. W&M finished 2-2 in the six-team event in UNC Wilmington’s stadium.
McRae’s teams went 90-74, 42-39 in the CAA, in three seasons. Athletic director Brian Mann thanked McRae and said in a release, “We expect a strong field of candidates and look forward to finding our next leader for Tribe baseball.” Division III Super Regionals Randolph-Macon 6, Adrian 5: Cox High graduate Sam Slevin (3-1) earned the victory in relief by pitching a scoreless ninth in Ashland as the Yellow Jackets took a 1-0 series lead.
Ocean Lakes High graduate Aidan Pinto hit a two-run homer and walked in his only plate appearances for R-MC. Matt Myers, who replaced him in left field, had a walk-off single. Granby High graduate Myles Webb was 3 for 5 with a run and an RBI for the Jackets.
Division III Super Regionals Misericordia 2, Christopher Newport 1: The 11th-ranked Cougars (38-9) from Pennsylvania completed a two-game sweep in Newport News before 391 fans Saturday, gaining a return trip to the eight-team D-III World Series in East Lake, Ohio, and ending the season for the No. 10 Captains (29-12). Misericordia, which won Frid.
