SURANNE Jones became a household name while playing Karen McDonald in Coronation Street over two decades ago. Since then her acting career has gone from strength to strength — here's everything you need to know about her. Suranne Jones is an English actress from Chadderton, Oldham.

The 45-year-old was brought up Catholic and lived in a house surrounded by farmland during childhood. Her first foray into theatre came when she joined the Oldham Theatre Workship and befriended future Corrie star Antony Cotton, known now for his role as Sean Tully. In 1997, she took a small role in Coronation Street, before returning to the soap full-time as Karen McDonald in 2000.



She starred in the ITV soap for four years, regularly taking centre stage in dramatic plots, mainly involving her relationship with on-screen husband Steve. From there she has gone on to star in numerous TV shows and films, becoming a familiar face on the big and small screens. Suranne's talent has landed her several top gongs — three awards for her Corrie role, one for her part in the play A Few Good Men, and a whopping four for Doctor Foster.

Following her stint on Coronation Street , which ended in 2004, Suranne picked up roles in ITV's Strictly Confidential (2006) and Harley Street (2008). In 2011, she bagged parts in Doctor Who and detective series Scott & Bailey — w ritten by Sally Wainwright, the series ran for five years, with Suranne playing Rachel Bailey and Lesley Sharp taking on the role of Janet Scott.
