With Juneuary behind us, it just might be the time of year when a lot of us seek refuge in air-conditioned movie theaters. Here’s a selection of what’s on tap at local indie cinemas this month. Here’s something potentially glorious for a summer afternoon: the 70th anniversary restoration of Akira Kurosawa’s 16th-century saga “ Seven Samurai ,” featuring Toshiro Mifune and Takashi Shimura.

It screens July 19-24. John Sayles’ soulful 1984 sci-fi comedy “ The Brother From Another Planet ” screens July 21. A series titled “Rewind, Be Kind” revisits a number of critical or financial flops from the aughts, to see if maybe we all missed something the first time around: “ Big Fat Liar ,” “ Scooby-Doo ,” “ Uptown Girls ,” “ Josie and the Pussycats ,” “ Van Helsing ,” “ The Mummy ,” “ The Phantom of the Opera ,” “ Sunshine ,” “ Punch-Drunk Love ” and “ Lady in the Water .



” Series passes are available for $84 ($64 SIFF members). Finally, mark your calendars for the return of CatVideoFest , the 2024 edition of which purrs its way into the Egyptian starting Aug. 2.
