BRYSON DECHAMBEAU praised Rory McIlroy as 'one of the best ever' and backed him to bounce back from his US Open heartbreak. The Northern Irishman 's 10-year wait for a Major title goes on after he came up short in devastating fashion at Pinehurst. A run of blistering birdies saw McIlroy erase a three-shot deficit to Bryson DeChambeau on Sunday as he surged up the leaderboard.
However, he shot himself in the foot with costly misses on 16 and 18, with his American rival taking advantage to win the day. All that McIlroy, 35, could do was watch on from the scoring room , with the Holywood man skipping media duties as he swiftly left Pinehurst . Speaking to the media afterwards, DeChambeau empathised with McIlroy, backing him to end his drought and then some before long.
He said: "Rory is one of the best to ever play and to be able to fight against a great like that is pretty special. "For him to miss that putt [on 18], I wouldn't wish it on anybody. It just happened to play out that way.
"He will win multiple more major championships, there is no doubt, and I think that fire in him will continue to grow and I have nothing but respect for how he plays the game of golf. "When he was climbing up the leader board and he was two ahead, I was like, 'uh oh!' but luckily things went my way today." The 30-year-old was praised for his comments, with fans expressing how impressed they were on social media.
Kurt commented: "Hes done and said everything right post victory or loss at every maj.
