“We didn’t get the results we wanted (in terms of wins) but we learned a lot,” summed up 24th year head coach Jeff Sanno reflecting on the West Perry varsity baseball team finishing last in the Mid Penn Colonial division with a 2-12 record and 7-13 overall. The frustration in Sanno’s voice was palpable as he added “looking back I guess we could have done some things differently.” “I think some guys tried to do too much.
” “We needed to focus more on the process and not just the outcome.” If you know coach Sanno you know he practically bleeds green and white and is not used to having a losing season. But there were some bright spots to the season to talk about concerning the players and it’s “all about the kids” as he would say.
The team votes and gives out three awards at the end of each season. This year junior Austin (Oz) Lyons was named team MVP and was also one of ten players selected to the second team Mid Penn All Star team. Junior first baseman Braedon McKeever won the Coaches’ Award which is basically a character award going to the player most team-oriented and representative of how a Mustang ballplayer should conduct himself.
McKeever finished second on the team in RBIs with 13. Lastly, the Gary Dixon Memorial Pitching Award went to junior Mason Sanno who fashioned a 1.91 ERA along with 32 K’s in 25.
